AI Overviews

Last reviewed: 2026-05-22

AI Overviews (AIO) is Google’s AI-generated answer surface shown above traditional Search results. AIO draws on Google’s index plus the Knowledge Graph and Featured Snippets; FAQPage schema is the highest-leverage AIO-citation signal.

What AI Overviews is

Launched globally in 2024 and continuing to expand, Google AI Overviews generates paragraph-length answers to queries above the traditional ranked results list. It cites sources inline, pulling from pages that Google’s systems have identified as authoritative for the query intent. For many informational and commercial queries, the AIO block receives the majority of user attention — pushing traditional ranked results below the fold.

How AIO citation differs from other answer engines

AIO is not a standard RAG system. It does not retrieve documents at query time from a third-party index — it operates within Google’s existing Search infrastructure, drawing on:

This means that standard SEO signals (domain authority, E-E-A-T, Featured Snippet eligibility) are more directly applicable to AIO than to other answer engines. A brand already ranking on page one for a query has a significantly higher probability of being cited in the AIO response to that query.

FAQPage schema and AIO

FAQPage schema remains the highest-leverage structured data signal for AIO inclusion. Pages that declare FAQPage with well-formed Question and Answer pairs are eligible for direct FAQ expansion in the AIO block — a higher level of citation than a simple inline link. For glossary-style content, DefinedTerm schema within a DefinedTermSet serves a similar function.

AIO in the CEAVERS measurement panel

CEAVERS includes Gemini (Google’s model) in its six-LLM panel; AIO is measured separately through Google Search query observation. Gemini scores in the CEAVERS panel correlate with AIO citation frequency for European brands — though the relationship is not deterministic, since AIO draws on Search signals rather than Gemini’s parametric knowledge alone.

Frequently asked

What are Google AI Overviews?
AI Overviews (AIO) is Google's AI-generated answer surface that appears above the traditional Search results list for many queries, summarising answers and citing sources.
How does AIO choose sources?
AIO draws on Google's Search index plus the Knowledge Graph and Featured Snippets. Pages with valid FAQPage schema, strong E-E-A-T signals, and KG presence are more likely to be cited.
Can publishers opt out of AIO?
Google offers crawl-level controls (Google-Extended) but no granular opt-out of AIO specifically. Most publishers benefit from inclusion via stronger citation patterns.
