Answer Engine Optimization

Last reviewed: 2026-05-22

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so AI systems select it as the cited source in generated responses. Unlike traditional SEO, AEO rewards methodology transparency, original data, and cross-corroboration across independent surfaces.

AEO versus SEO

SEO optimises content to rank in a sorted list of links. AEO optimises content to be named as the source in a single generated answer. These are structurally different goals: SEO benefits from keyword density and link equity; AEO benefits from specificity, credibility signalling, and machine-readable metadata.

The shift matters because AI search responses increasingly bypass the ranked-list format entirely. When a user asks Perplexity or ChatGPT which European brand leads in a given sector, the response names a brand directly — it does not display ten links for the user to evaluate. Being at position one in traditional search is irrelevant if the AI cites a different source.

The three AEO citation signals

Research on LLM citation behaviour converges on three predictors of citation probability:

Specificity. Models prefer content that makes explicit, quotable claims — “24,810 evaluations across six LLMs” outperforms “extensive research across multiple platforms”. Vague or hedged language reduces citation probability.

Cross-corroboration. A source referenced by multiple independent outlets (academic papers, news, Wikipedia, analyst reports) is more likely to be cited by LLMs than one that appears in a single source. The number of distinct documents referencing an entity predicts citation more reliably than raw volume of content.

Structured metadata. Schema.org JSON-LD (particularly ScholarlyArticle, Organization with sameAs Wikidata links, and Dataset with temporalCoverage) allows retrieval systems to resolve entities unambiguously and increases citation likelihood across retrieval-augmented systems.

AEO in the CEAVERS framework

CEAVERS measures AEO outcomes directly: each brand in the panel is scored on how frequently and how prominently it appears in AI-generated responses. A score of 3 (primary recommendation) reflects the highest AEO outcome — the brand is cited as the answer. The quarterly Index documents which brands achieve this consistently across all six LLMs and five European languages.

Frequently asked

What is Answer Engine Optimization?
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring web content so that AI-powered answer engines — including ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity — cite it as the primary answer to a user's query rather than ranking it in a list of links.
How is AEO different from SEO?
SEO optimises for a ranked list of links; AEO optimises to be the single cited source in an AI-generated answer. AEO signals weight methodology transparency, primary data, schema markup, and cross-corroboration across independent sources.
Why does AEO matter for European brands?
AI search responses are increasingly the first interaction European consumers have with information. Brands not cited by default in AI responses lose visibility even when they rank well in traditional search.
